NYC-based photographer Allison Joyce traveled to Middleton, Tennessee for four days of Hostile Environment training.

This past week I took the long megabus ride from New York to Middleton, Tennessee for four days of Hostile Environment training by Pioneer Consulting Group. We stayed on Robert King’s farm, which worked as the “media house”, where we all cooked, slept and hung out together between classes.

I’d been wanting to take a class like this for a few years, and especially after watching Libya, where the dangers of freelancers running into situations of unrest completely unprepared became evident, but the cost of the course was just unaffordable. A basic medical class seemed like a good idea, but it didn’t cover all the other things that are just as important in those situations. Pioneer offered the course at a huge discounted rate for freelancers, and when I heard about the class I jumped on it.

NYC-based photographer Allison Joyce shares some behind-the-scenes photos from Fall Fashion Week 2012.

Twice yearly in February and September a small bunch of tents pops up in the back of Lincoln Center, and for 7 days a swarm of designers, socialites, celebrities, bloggers and media rotate in and out of shows all over the city. I’ve been covering Fashion Week almost every season since 2007, and while it’s a long, exhausting week shooting the runways, I’m always happy for the nice light and interesting moments backstage.

NYC-based freelancer Allison Joyce documented the first day that same-sex couples could wed in New York.

Last Sunday was a beautiful and historic day for New York when we became the 6th state to allow same sex marriage. Sunday was the first day that couples could wed, and when I arrived at the Manhattan court house at 8am there was a line around the block with hundreds of couples waiting to wed. The scene outside the courthouse was like a party, with couples and supporters crowding the sidewalk, even breaking out in song at some points with “going to the chapel, and we’re going to get marrieddd!” Later on I went over to the Brooklyn court house and it was the same thing, with supporters crowding the sidewalk and cheering on the couples as they exited the building after being married. It was reported that the judges were bickering with each other, each wanted a turn to marry a same sex couple on the historic day. City hall across the street set up a sort of party room with free champagne, cake, music and a photo booth for the couples.

Nomad photojournalist Allison Joyce has been trekking throughout India hopping on and off planes, trains, and automobiles (and boats) and has been updating her blog between power outages.

It’s been a long time since I posted. After Jharia I stopped for few days in New Delhi to relax and regroup, then took a week to travel to Cox’s Bazar, the tip of Bangladesh that borders Myanmar, stopping along the way in Calcutta and Dhaka. I started to shoot a project for a few days and then was called to Chittagong to work on something else…
