About the panelists:
Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands from The Clash to Boy George as well as 3 Police album covers. Moving to New York in 1982, she was drawn to the underground Hip Hop scene. Her photographs of pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt’n’Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, Big Daddy Kane and 1980’s style were in the 2015 ‘Hip Hop Revolution’ exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Her photographs have recently been exhibited at: The Photographer’s Gallery London, The Museum of the City Of New York, HVW8 LA, Le Salon Paris, Morrison Hotel Gallery NYC, Tower RecordsTokyo. Janette lives and works in New York City. She is the New York editor for the British style magazine ‘Jocks&Nerds’.
Josh Cheuse was born in New York in 1965 and won a full scholarship for photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York, having started his photography career in nightclubs at the age of 16. From 1993 until 2016, Josh was an art director, at Sony Music creating packaging and websites for artists including AC/DC, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart while still finding time to go on the road to photograph his favorite groups. Josh is currently Creative Director of The Verve Label Group in New York.
LeAnn Mueller is an Austin and Los Angeles based photographer who began her career at Brooks Institute of Photography. She has shot for a wide variety of clients; from Rolling Stone and Vibe magazine to City Bank and Duracell. Whether photographing actors, musicians, lifestyle or fashion, LeAnn shoots with a naturalistic approach, her images are never forced and are consistently warm and inviting. LeAnn is known for her upbeat attitude, creating a fun environment on set and encouraging everyone around to play a part in the creative process.
Drew Gurian is a New York City based portrait photographer, focusing on the intersection of photography, music and entertainment cultures. His ability to seek out and capture raw, intimate moments is what defines his style. His personal aesthetic has translated seamlessly to brands like Red Bull and Reebok, and has garnered the attention of editorial clients like The Associated Press, Rolling Stone, VICE and The New York Times. Drew has spent the last ten years traveling the world with his camera, is accustomed to working with productions of all sizes, working quickly under pressure, and staying within budget to deliver memorable and emotionally charged imagery of celebrities in and out of the spotlight.
About the moderator:
Deborah Dragon is a photo producer, editor and portfolio consultant. Formerly Rolling Stone’s deputy photo editor she has collaborated with a long list of award-winning photographers to conceptualize, supervise and execute hundreds of memorable photo shoots for thirteen years. She has also helped implement the visual presentation of such top national publications as FHM, Entertainment Weekly and Details. Deborah continues her fine-art work taking photographs using handmade pinhole cameras, exhibiting her work in numerous shows. She has a BFA in photography and lives in New York City.
