RIT Junior Foster Snell was photographing at the Rangers game in Arlington when a fan fell 30 feet while trying to catch a foul ball.
I was photographing my very first professional baseball game, and having a great time. It was the bottom of the fifth inning when the fan fell, and there was an immediate gasp, and then silence. For a few minutes, everyone just stood there not knowing what to do. A few of the players who had seen it were kneeling down, seemingly praying. The umpires couldn’t bear to look. After sixteen very long, chaotic minutes, the game resumed, but in a very different mood. I found it hard to concentrate on photographing. Of course it didn’t take long for the fans to continue their usual chanting, but everyone was devastated by what they had just witnessed.
