Snowkiting – by Isaiah Downing

Isaiah Downing lives and works out of his truck driving all over North America photograph non-mainstream action sports and recently shot snowkiting in Idaho.

So for the majority of February and March I have been holed up in a small cabin in the forgotten land of Idaho.  I came out here to shoot snowkiting, which if you follow my other stuff can imagine what it entails.  If you are old and can’t remember what an imagination is (mom) the easiest way to describe it is, skiing or snowboarding while being pulled/powered by a giant maneuverable kite!  The beauty of snowkiting lies in the freedom and convenience of the kite.  If you are at all familiar with backcountry skiing or snowboarding you know how much work it takes to get into the back country, by the time you get to your destination it’s time for a lunch break and recovery before you descend your line.  With the kite pulling you along it is doing 95% of the work in a fraction of the time.  From what I have heard it isn’t unusual to cover 30-40 miles a day on a kite…good luck doing that human powered.  Of course, all this is assuming you have wind.  Just like all other kite sports you are completely dependent of wind….which we had intermittently in Idaho, bummer.  So in between chasing wind, watching movies, and playing cards we got in some good days of shooting.  Here are some of my favorites that will most likely be published next season!
